BOND, SHOREDITCH
Architect: Milk Architecture & Design
One cold January, Ursula asked for our help designing her brand new hair salon in a beautiful heritage shop in Shoreditch. The interior needed to feel luxurious but use raw ingredients and needed to be contemporary but also quaint. The aim was to create an immersive space for time out, chatter and laughter… and ideally to be completed by Easter!
The result is a space swathed in rich navy floor to ceiling vertical blinds that symmetrically enclose the cutting room between the two arched shopped windows. Tall arched mirrors are mounted on slender black utility poles and float in space reflecting glowing pendant globes to bathe faces in a warm diffuse light.
Along the rear wall, a stair connects the cutting room to the spa wash and colour lab. Handmade oak cabinetry and deep black surfaces are the key to this space, storing healthy hair products and an array of colour tints and dyes that can be tailored to each and every client.
A tight team collaborated under the guidance of a super confident and supportive client. Together we found ways to reduce construction time, purchasing only from stock and making cabinetry on site. We all celebrated the opening together in May, not quite Easter, but an achievement we were all proud of!
